10 Most Anticipated Hollywood Blockbusters in 2017 - Part I

2017 is shaping up to be spectacular for us movie maniacs. So many blockbusters in the card, big directors making a comeback and some very interesting movies all lining up to make this year a one to remember. The list is so big that I have decided to put in as many as five blog to cover them all. I am going to focus first on the potential Blockbusters coming up in this year. There are almost 30 movies in this category, which I will break into a two parts of ten movies each and then mention the remaining ten to complete all the 30. This list is my top ten blockbuster movies to be releasing this year.

10. Logan

The Third Installment of the Wolverine Series in the XMen franchise is all set to rip the screen with the famed adamantium claws. This movie is to be Hugh Jackman's last movie as Wolverine after playing the character for 17 years (since the release of the first X-Men movie, way back in 2000).
The movie draws inspiration from the very famous Old Man Logan comic book story line, and the initial trailers hint at a very personal story of Wolverine and X23 (another child mutant with similar powers) It is fitting that Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Professor Charles Xavier, bringing a semblance of closure as he started of as the mentor of Wolverine in the first X-Men movie and
Wolverine is the mentor of X-23 in this movie. The gritty Western theme and going for an R rating looks perfect for this movie and a fitting swansong to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.
Logan Releases on March 3, 2017.

9. Justice League

This movie is the sequel to the 2016 Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice movie.
With Superman (presumably) dead, Batman goes on a mission to find the meta-humans The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg with the help of Wonder Woman to form the Justice League.
With the powerful villain Darkseid of Jack Kirby's New Gods fame already teased in one of the Batman's dream sequence in Dawn Of Justice, his uncle Steppenwolf is all set to be the
main antagonist of this movie. Steppenwolf (who was seen introducing the Mother Boxes to Lex Luthor) is one of the military leads of Apokolips, the planet where Darkseid rules;is an
immortal with superhuman strength and the newly formed Justice League will be pitted against him and his paradeamons.Henry Cavill has already teased the black Superman costume in Instagram, so we can bet Superman will return in the end (surprise....!!!). Zack Snyder will helm the Director's chair again while Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck will be back as Superman and Batman respectively, while Gal Gadot will repise her role as Wonder Woman.
This movie will see a host of exciting actors joining the DC bandwagon with Ezra Miller (Credence Bareborn in Fantastic Beast and Where To Find Them) as Barry Allen (The Flash),
Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo of Game Of Thrones) as Arthur Curry (Aquaman) , Ray Fisher as Victor Stone (Cyborg), Willem Defoe as Nuidis Vulko (Atlantian), Amber Herd as Meera (Aquaman's Love interest), J.K Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. Reprising their roles from the previous movies are Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfre Pennyworth and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. I was a bit dissapointed with Batman V Superman theatrical release (though the Extended Cut was far better), so I am keeping my finger's crossed for this one. Come on Jack Snyder, give us an awesome Justice League movie please.
Justice League is scheduled to be released on November 17, 2017.

8. Dunkirk

Stepping away from the Science Fiction genre, Christopher Nolan's next installment is an epic War Thriller set during World War II and is based on the events of Operation Dynamo, also known as the Dunkirk evacuation or the Miracle of Dunkirk, which was the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk, France, between 26 May and 4 June 1940 after being surrounded by the German Army.
Cinematography is in the hands of Hoyte van Hoytema (Intersteller) and Hans Zimmer will be scoring the music for this movie. Witten, Co-Produced and Directed by Christopher Nolan, this movie has the newcomer Fionn Whitehead as the lead along with Cillian Murphy, Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, Harry Styles, James D'Arcy, Barry Keoghan and Tom Glynn-Carney among others. We are expecting another Nolan Epic.
Dunkirk is scheduled to be released on July
21, 2017.

7. War for the Planet of the Apes

Caesar is back in the third installment of the Planet Of The Apes Reboot, leading the army of genetically enhanced apes against human beings in a full blown war that will shape the future of their species and Earth. This movie is a sequel to the critically acclaimed 2014 movie, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. The movie trailer looks beautiful  and exciting. Directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In,Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and written by Mark Bomback and Reeves, the film stars Andy Serkis as Caeser, Woody Harrelson as the main human antagonist, Steve Zahn and Judy Greer among others.
War for the Planet of the Apes is scheduled to be released on July 14, 2017

6. Kong: Skull Island

Paying an omage to the cult classic Apocalypse Now, Legendary Picture brings a reinterpretation of the mythical King Kong back to the silver screen as the second installment of their own shared movie universe. The film is set in the 1970's when a team of soldiers and explorers venture into the uncharted Skull Island in the Pacific Ocean and face the Island's resident King, the giant Kong.
With Godzilla Vs Kong set for a May 29, 2020 release date, and a rebooted Godzilla debuting in 2014; it lead to the doubt - how is Kong going to fight this huge Godzilla?
The trailers of this film has put that concern to bed. This King Kong is massive, and the biggest incarnation we have ever seen in the cinemas in terms of size. The movie is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and has a star studded cast of Tom Hiddlestone, Brie Larson, Samuel L Jackson, John Goodman, John C Riley, Toby Kebbel among others.
Kong: Skull Island is scheduled to be released on March 10, 2017

5. Thor Ragnarok

Ragnarok is the Norse Mythology of apocalypse. Add to it the Gladiatorial battle of Planet Hulk story and we have got our self an epic in hand.
With the current Infinity Gauntlet story line of the MCU racing toward the two part Infinity Wars movie, Thor Ragnarok, directed by Taika Waititi(What We Do In The Shadows, Hunt For Wilderpeople), looks to be a pivotal moment in Phase Three, as per Kevin Feige, which will change the stakes altogether, much like what Captain America Winter Soldier did in Phase II.
This movie will introduce a lot of important characters, namely Valkyrie played by Tessa Thompson (Selma, Creed, Westworld), The Grandmaster played by Jeff Goldblum (Independence Day, Jurassic Park), Skurge played by Karl Urban (Lord Of The Rings, Star Trek, Judge Dredd),
the powerful Surtur, the fire demon living in the extra-dimensional plane of Muspelheim and Thor's nemesis and Hela played by Cate Blanchett - the ruler of Hel. Reprising their roles from previous movies are Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddlestone as Loki, Sir Antony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk. And adding to this already star studded cast is Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. Both Korg and Meik, characters from Planet Hulk story line are included in this movie, as well as Taika providing a hint at the Celestial (introduced in Guardians Of Galaxy movie) in his Instagram posts, speculations are ripe if one of the the greatest characters in Thor's Mythology who also plays an important part in the Planet Hulk story line could show up - Beta Ray Bill. James Gunn has said that Thanos will not appear in GOTG2, so we can safely bet that Thanos will have some part to play in Ragnarok (if Hela is the replacement for Lady Death then it makes sense). Thor and Hulk battling in the Gladiator ring, now  that is something I will pay my money for.
Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled to be released on November 3, 2017

4. Wonder Woman

With Batman V Superman creating a distinct split in the audience worldwide, DC and Warner Brothers are desperately in search of a movie that is a massive hit unanimously across the world.
In terms of revenue, Batman V Superman was among the top ten highest grossing movies of 2016, but the voice of the critics and audience panning many aspects of the movie is not what the studio was really aspiring for. With Marvel Studios rolling on and on, DC is in need of a home run. And Wonder Woman just maybe that movie.
Set during World War I, when Steve Trevor crash lands in Themyscira, the daughter of Zeus - Princess Diana (Wonder Woman) learns about the war from him and leaves her home to help humanity and stop the war. Aries, the son of Zeus and the God of War is set to be the main villain in this movie.Till now the trailers look really good, the action sequence looks spectacular and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman was one of the best things to come out of the Batman V Superman movie (that entry music...wow..!!).
The film is directed by Patty Jenkins (Monsters), written by Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns, from a story by Heinberg and Zack Snyder, and stars Gal Gadot as Princess Diana,
Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta of Themyscira, Robin Wright as General Antiope(the sister of Hippolyta and Diana's aunt) and Lucy Davis as Etta Candy
(Steve Trevor's secretary)along with others. A lot is riding on this movie, not only in terms of the stability of the DC movie universe but also in establishing the credibility of Female Superheroes in this world of Superhero movies.
Wonder Woman is scheduled to be released on June 2, 2017

3. Spiderman : Homecoming

Spiderman made a triumphant debut in the  MCU, fighting alongside Team Ironman in Captain America Civil War. This year Marvel's web slinger gets his solo movie in Spiderman Homecoming which will be a part of the ongoing MCU. Director Jon Watts is going to take Peter Parker back to his High School days, where he juggles between his life as an ordinary school student and his alter ego -Spiderman. Robert Downing Jr will reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and this movie will enhance the relationship between him and Peter Parker already set in Civil War as he takes on a mentor role in Spiderman's life. Tom Holland will return in this movie as Spiderman and will be facing formidable foes like Phineas Mason / Tinkerer (played by Michael Chernus), Shocker (played by Bokeem Woodbine), and the main villain of the movie - Adrian Toomes / Vulture played by Michael Keaton. Other casts include Marisa Tomei as May Parker, Zendaya as Michelle,Laura Harrier as Liz Allan, Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson. Jon Favreau reprises his role as Happy Hogan from the Iron Man series.
Spiderman : Homecoming is scheduled to be released on July 7, 2017

2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2

Star Lord, Gamora, Drax The Destroyer, Rocket Racoon are back as the Guardians Of the Galaxy with the cute baby Groot. This movie will take the Guardians across
the cosmos filled with crazy adventures and Peter Quill/Star Lord will learn more about his father - Ego The Living Planet.
Hilarious, fun and action packed,  Director James Gunn is sure to take us on another joy ride like the last installment. Yondu and Nebula will join the Guardians team and we will be introduced to new characters like Mantis - a new member of the Guardians who was raised by Ego, Ayesha - the golden High Priestess, Taserface - the leader of the mutinous group of Ravagers and one of the antagonist in this movie. Reprising thier roles from the previous movie are Chris Pratt as Star Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel voicing Groot, Bradley Cooper voicing Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula and Glenn Close as Irani Rael, the Supreme Commander of the Nova Corps. And the icing on the cake is the two new addition to MCU - Kurt Russel as Ego The Living Planet, Star Lord's father and Sylvester Stallone as a part of the Nova Corps. Thanos is possibly going to sit out of this movie, but there is enough to be super excited. Probably baby Groot is going to steal the movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to be released on May 5, 2017

1. Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi is the second installment in the latest Sequel Trilogy, following the events of Star Wars Episode VII - The Force Awakens which released in December, 2015. The story would revolve around the cursed Skywalker family with Rey in the forefront. It is up to speculation who is mentioned to here as The Last Jedi, whether it is Rey or Luke Skywalker, who returned in the end of The Force Awakens. There is mystery surrounding Rey herself, how she is so much into the Force and whether she is a descendant of the Skywalker family or maybe from the Obi Wan bloodline.  Kylo Ren/Ben Solo has killed his father Han Solo but would he have a showdown with his Uncle Luke or his Mother General Leia Organa? What would be the next move for Supreme Commander Snoke and how would the Resistance counter? Written and Directed by Ryan Johnson, and reprising their roles are Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carry Fisher as General Leia Organa, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley as Rey, Oscar Issac as Poe Damion. New additions are Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro in yet unnamed characters. 2016 marked the sad passing of Carry Fisher, having completed her work for the movie. Under the tutelage of Disney and Lucas Films, it is a safe bet to say this Star Wars movie would be the biggest blockbuster of the year. Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi is set to release on December 15, 2017.
